The iPhone 14 Pro beats any other phone with its size, speed, and camera features. It’s not a big upgrade from the iPhone 13 Pro, but that’s because the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max were already great. The Pro series is so good that it’s hard to make it better. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have been released in September 2023, so the iPhone 14 Pro will probably be discontinued by Apple, but you can still get it cheaper from retailers and carriers.

iPhone 14 Pro Review: How we tested

I got my hands on the new iPhone 14 Pro. It’s a bit like its predecessor, but with a few tweaks. It’s got a fresh color palette, a redesigned notch, and it’s water-resistant, heavier and larger than some rivals, like the Pixel 6 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra.

This iPhone is a beast! It’s powered by the A16 Bionic chip, which ensures a smooth experience. I tested it with games, apps, and benchmarks – not a single lag or stutter. The battery? Solid. It lasted a full day with 5G and GPS on. Plus, it charges fast and has excellent wireless reception.

The display and cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro are top-notch. The screen is bright, crisp, and smooth, with an always-on mode and HDR10+. The cameras? They’re impressive. They capture stunning photos and videos, even in low light, and offer features like 3x zoom, night mode, portrait mode, cinematic mode, and ProRes video.

Running on iOS 16, the iPhone 14 Pro offers some cool features. You can personalize your lock screen with widgets, manage app tracking, switch focus modes, and use shortcuts. Plus, it has handy features like Face ID, Apple Pay, CarKey, AirDrop, AirPlay, and safety features.

After spending some time with the iPhone 14 Pro, here’s my two cents. There are things I liked and didn’t like, which I’ll share. I’ll also give my rating and recommendation. Hopefully, this review will help you decide if the iPhone 14 Pro is the right fit for you.

The iPhone 14 Pro is the perfect blend of Apple’s top-notch tech. Its 6.1-inch size is just right, and the front face has been revamped with a new Dynamic Island and a fantastic always-on display. It outperforms rivals with a speedier and more efficient A16 Bionic chip, and the upgraded camera setup is sure to satisfy all but the most discerning smartphone photographers. But if you’re after the largest iPhone screen paired with this phone’s performance, you might want to consider the pricier 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max.

  • Display is remarkably beautiful
  • Cameras are exceptional

Cons

  • Lack of SIM tray may be inconvenient for certain users

iPhone 14 Pro Review: Price and availability

On September 7, 2022, Apple unveiled the entire iPhone 14 line – the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Following this, the iPhone 14 Pro, along with the rest of the models (except the 14 Plus, which made its grand entrance on October 7), went on sale on September 16. If you’ve already set your heart on the iPhone 14 Pro, it’s worth checking out our roundup of the best iPhone 14 deals to ensure you’re getting the best value.

Starting at $999 / £1,099 / AU$1,749 for the base 128GB model, the iPhone 14 Pro offers a range of storage options up to 1TB. iPhone 14 Pro Review: Design

The image shows an iPhone 14 Pro placed on a wooden surface. The phone’s screen is turned on, displaying various app icons including Messages, Calendar, Photos, Camera and others. There are notifications at the top of the screen showing the weather as 69°F and a calendar event scheduled for the 10th. The phone has a black bezel around the screen and is designed with rounded corners. The wooden surface beneath the phone has visible grains and textures indicating it is made of planks. The image is a visual representation of an iPhone 14 Pro displaying various app icons and notifications on a wooden surface.

The iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max are not a radical redesign of the iPhone, but they are a nice upgrade.

The iPhone 14 Pro looks almost identical to the iPhone 13 Pro from the back. They both have a stainless steel frame, a brushed glass back, and a shiny screen with Ceramic Shield, a tough material that protects the screen (we didn’t drop it to see how tough).

The iPhone 14 Pro is slightly bigger and heavier than the iPhone 13 Pro, but you won’t notice it. It even fits in the same case. The buttons and ports are in the same places, including the Lightning port. Maybe one day, the iPhone will switch to USB-C, but not today.

The only visible difference for US customers is the lack of a SIM slot. The iPhone 14 line in the US uses eSIM only. It looks cleaner, but we don’t know how US customers will feel about it. We had no issues with setting it up, though. The iPhone 14 is still water- and dust-resistant. We put it under the faucet, and it was fine.

The design doesn’t reveal the biggest change until you turn on the screen. The iPhone 14 Pro is not just a prettier version of the iPhone 13 Pro. It’s a more powerful and more useful phone, thanks to the Dynamic Island.

iPhone 14 Pro Review: Colors

The iPhone 14 Pro models come in four unique colors: Silver, Gold, Space Black, and Deep Purple. Silver and Gold are classics, with Gold now featuring a more beige back glass. The Silver color refers to the device’s edges, while the rear is white.

The iPhone 14 Pro debuts two new colors: Space Black and Deep Purple. Space Black is a true black color, much darker than the previous Graphite, satisfying those who’ve wanted a darker option since the iPhone 7’s Black and Jet Black. Deep Purple replaces the iPhone 13 Pro’s Sierra Blue.

Remember, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro have different color options. So, if you’re set on a specific color, it might not be available for your preferred model. For the best color of iPhone 14 Pro, it’s all about personal preference. As for the most popular color, it’s too early to tell. But with these exciting options, there’s something for everyone.

iPhone 14 Pro Review: Display

The iPhone 14 Pro has the same screen resolution as the iPhone 13 Pro, but it has a new feature that makes it more fun: the Dynamic Island. It’s a long shape at the top of the screen that changes depending on what you’re doing. It’s like a magic notch that can grow and shrink. It has a new selfie camera, an IR sensor, and a flood illuminator. The Dynamic Island can show different things, like your face, a music graph, or a caller ID. You can also touch it to do things. No other phone has anything like this.

Dynamic Island is awesome The iPhone 14 Pro also has a better ProMotion display, which can change the refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz. This means the screen can save energy when it’s not moving, and look smooth when it is. It’s hard to test, but we think it’s awesome.

ProMotion and always-on display are great Another new thing is the always-on display, which shows you useful stuff when the screen is asleep. It’s not very bright or colorful, but it’s still nice. It shows you widgets, images, media, and lock screen info. You can turn it on or off with the power button, or in the settings. You can also wake up the screen by tapping it.

iPhone 14 Pro Review: Camera

The iPhone 14 Pro’s camera is a game-changer. Its standout feature is the 48MP sensor, Apple’s first foray into pixel-binning sensors. This tech tweak enhances low-light performance and color fidelity.

The 48MP sensor allows full-resolution raw images, offering more editing freedom in apps like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. The ultra-wide camera now has a bigger sensor for improved low-light performance.

Apple’s Macro mode on the iPhone 14 Pro, using the ultra-wide lens, results in stunning close-up images. A zoom option is part of the primary sensor, delivering high-quality 2x zoom photos.

On the video side, Apple has upgraded Cinematic Mode to support 4K 30fps. There’s also a new video mode: Action, which uses digital stabilization technology to smooth out excessive movement.

Overall, the iPhone 14 Pro’s imaging system is solid, thanks to Apple’s new Photonic Engine. While Apple could have pushed further in the zoom and megapixel department, the iPhone 14 Pro marks a significant leap in Apple’s photographic technology. It’s one of the best camera phones on the market.

iPhone 14 Pro Review: Performance

The iPhone 14 Pro has a new chipset: the A16 Bionic. It’s built on a 4nm process, which means more transistors in the same space. Apple claims the A16 Bionic boosts CPU performance by up to 40%. It also has a new display engine, a new image signal processor, and better efficiency.

The iPhone 14 Pro is a beast in daily use. It multitasks like a pro, loads games like Genshin Impact fast, and never lags or freezes. Apps may crash sometimes, but that’s probably a software bug, not a performance issue. The benchmarks confirm the amazing performance. The device scored 1874 in GeekBench 5’s single-core test, and 5422 in its multi-core test. These are impressive scores. They beat all Android phones, even the ones with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip. They also show a big improvement over the A15 Bionic chip. The iPhone 13 Pro scored 1720 in GeekBench 5’s single-core test, and 4789 in its multi-core test. Apple is still the leader in smartphone performance, and it looks like it will stay that way for a while.

iPhone 14 Pro Review: Software

Every iPhone 14 comes pre-loaded with iOS 16, and it’s not just a pretty face. This update is bursting at the seams with new features that will change how you interact with your iPhone. Not only does it bring a fresh look, but it also introduces functionalities that will make your iPhone 14 Pro experience more enjoyable and surprising.

One of the standout features is the custom lock screens. You’re not just stuck with one; you can have multiple, each linked to a different focus setting. But that’s not all. It also introduces a nifty image segmentation technology that adds a whole new dimension to your lock screen.

But wait, there’s more! You’ll find a handy Search button right on your home screen, and you can now edit and retrieve text messages. Ever wished you could unsend an email? Well, now you can. And getting around has never been easier with multi-stop directions in Maps.

And for the shutterbugs out there, you’ll love the live text capture from video and the image segmentation that lets you grab the subject from virtually any photo and drop it into apps like Notes and Messages.

There’s a whole world of changes to explore and use in iOS 16, and they undoubtedly take the iPhone 14 Pro experience to the next level. So, buckle up and enjoy the ride!

iPhone 14 Pro Review: Battery life and charging

Apple hasn’t revealed the iPhone 14 Pro’s battery size. It only claims a slightly longer battery life than the iPhone 13 Pro (23 hours of video playback versus 22 hours). This is probably due to the 4-nanometer A16 Bionic and the new adaptive refresh rate, not a bigger battery. We think you can stream videos for 24 hours, but the battery can run out faster if you use the phone outside, under the sun. The screen gets super bright (2,000 nits) to make up for it.

The iPhone 14 Pro comes with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, but no power adapter. You need to buy the 20W charger separately. Apple says it can charge the phone to 50% in 30 minutes, and we agree. But that’s not different from the iPhone 13 Pro. The iPhone 14 Pro still doesn’t have ultrafast charging. The phone can also charge wirelessly with MagSafe and Qi.
